This position is located within a health-care facility, therefore, the successful candidate will be required to provide verification of full vaccination against Covid-19 provided prior to the start date, as required by a provincial health mandate.

Job Summary
This position entails work within the context of a client centered care model, UBC Student Health Services (SHS) standards of practice and patient care guidelines, and in accordance with the British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM) standards of practice and patient care guidelines for Nurse Practitioners (NP). The incumbent will provide primary health care for the diverse UBC student community. This position will work collaboratively with family physicians, specialist physicians, nurses, clerical staff and administrative staff within SHS, as well as externally with members of UBC Counselling Services, Health Equity, Promotion & Education, Centre for Accessibility, Student Support Services, and the UBC community at large. This individual will consult, confer and collaborate with external services and resources, participate in health outreach and education to the UBC community, demonstrate expertise and leadership, maintain and advance clinical competence, participate in committee work related to campus health and wellness, and participate in approved research projects related to health and wellness. The NP demonstrates expertise and enacts a commitment to anti-racism, equity, diversity and inclusionary practices throughout their care for students.

Organizational Status
Reports to the Medical Director of UBC SHS and works closely with family physicians, specialist physicians, and other clinic staff members. The incumbent participates in collaboration with other campus groups involved in health care, promotion and research. This position is primarily based at Student Health Services with some time spent each week at other locations on campus.

Work Performed
Works independently and as member of a multidisciplinary team including family physicians, nurses and specialist physicians to provide primary health care, virtually and in-person, for students at UBC.

Researches and explores internal and external resources, including making appropriate referrals to internal and external providers.

Collaborates with Counselling Services and Wellness Advisers regarding referrals and shared clients.

Collaborates with the Centre for Accessibility regarding accommodations and other supports.

Provides leadership in improving health care for equity-deserving students.

Participates in on-call rotation with other primary care providers of SHS in response to urgent or emergent medically related calls from pharmacies, laboratories, hospitals, or active UBC students outside regular clinic hours.

Plans and participates in leading group sessions for patients at SHS.

Liaises with Managers, Student Support Services and internal and external health care providers to provide continuity of care and follow up care and/or consultation.

Plans and participates in collaborative meetings regarding ongoing care for students with complex health conditions.

Collaborates with Health Equity, Promotion & Education to promote health care topics, and to provide educational sessions to UBC departments.

Participates in planning, research, and ongoing evaluation to improve health services for students.

Participates in health related committees.

Maintains and documents all information related to the patient visit.

Acts as the student’s advocate to protect, and promote the client’s right to autonomy, respect, privacy, dignity and access to information.

Prepares statistical and/or narrative reports.

Maintains competency in medicine by attending regular conferences, workshops, or other continuing medical education as required by BCCNM.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
Under the supervision of the Medical Director of SHS, this position is responsible for high quality care. Responsible for ensuring adherence to the standards of practice and patient care guidelines of UBC SHS. The result of failure to provide appropriate quality of care and referrals could result in serious harm to students with health conditions and legal accountability to the administrators of the University and/or damage to the due diligence reputation of the University .

Supervision Received
Works under the general supervision of the Medical Director of SHS and will consult on major problem areas. The NP is responsible for providing quality care and is expected to take on all the responsibilities of a licensed Nurse Practitioner. Consults and collaborates with family physicians, nurses, psychiatrists or other specialists regarding care.

Supervision Given
May provide assignments and direction to staff as required.

Requirements

Masters of Nursing – Nurse Practitioner degree.

Registered with the BCCNM as a Nurse Practitioner and is covered by Canadian Nurses Protective Society (CNPS) professional liability protection.

Experience working in acute or outpatient mental health settings or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience would be an asset.

Experience in working within a post-secondary institution or other multicultural setting would be an asset.

Comprehensive knowledge of mental health assessment, and diagnostic categorization (i.e. DSM-5 and updates).

Knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Infant Act and the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.

Knowledge of adolescent and young adult health issues and disorders including mental health issues and disorders.

Demonstrated ability in primary care.

Demonstrated ability to provide competent and culturally safe care for diverse populations.

Proven sensibility and appreciation of the role that gender, race, disability, gender identity, sexuality, social background play in the experience of health and wellbeing.

Demonstrated ability to communicate and deal effectively with clients, their families, staff and faculty on campus and staff of outside agencies.

Ability to teach health topics by providing health education and information, both on an individual and in a group setting.

Demonstrated ability to collaborate on topics of health promotion and education.

Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively as a member of an interdisciplinary team.

Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with other providers on designated committees for health planning, research and evaluation.

Demonstrated ability to adjust to new or unexpected situations.

Demonstrated ability to deal with conflict situations.

Excellent administrative and organizational skills.

Demonstrated ability to communicate orally and in writing
