Nurse Practitioner

Part Time | Calgary, AB

Your Opportunity:
Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary, Alberta is the epicentre for cardiovascular care in Southern Alberta and is looking for a full time Cardiology Nurse Practitioner (NP). The NP will manage patients in the FMC Cardiac Structural Heart Program as part of a team, including cardiologists, nursing, pharmacy, and allied health members. The NP will provide directed, autonomous, comprehensive, holistic care to the medical cardiology population. The NP will also have the opportunity to contribute to the program and patient care through advanced clinical practice, leadership, consultations, referrals, education and research.
Reporting to the Manager, Cardiac Intervention, Cardiac Diagnostics and Cardiac Speciality Clinics, this position functions as part of a multidisciplinary team working closely with the Division of Cardiology within the Structural Heart Program. As a regulated member of the health care team, the NP utilizes critical thinking, problem solving and decision-making skills to provide care with a focus on medical cardiology to patients who present with acute medical illness for medical assessment, care, and treatment. The primary responsibility of the NP is to provide comprehensive direct patient care as a central member of the team.
The NP is authorized and competent to perform comprehensive assessment, diagnosis (including the ordering and interpretation of tests), intervention (including the prescribing of medications), management, referral, and evaluation of client care across the continuum of health care services. The NP provides leadership and actively participates in program development and evaluation, research, and clinical teaching activities. The NP participates in interdisciplinary collaboration in the practice setting to ensure consistency for drug prescribing and distribution in accordance with provincial guidelines.
As a NP, you will perform advanced, focused, comprehensive health assessments, interventions, as well as order, interpret and perform diagnostic tests to formulate differential diagnoses and management plans through the integration of patient information and evidence-based practice. This will be done in collaboration with the attending medical team. The NP plays a key role in coordination of efficient discharge planning/disposition planning and discharge documentation for both patients and physicians.
The NP is responsible for continuous care of the patient and their family by conducting daily assessments, investigation, management, and medical documentation of assigned inpatients. The NP will both communicate assessment findings and/or diagnoses including outcomes and prognoses to patients/families in collaboration with the medical team and utilize complex reasoning to safely coordinate and manage care for patients while promoting continuity. The NP is also responsible for daily communication with nursing and allied health team members. The NP is expected to contribute and create opportunities for team members’ and other healthcare providers to optimize knowledge, clinical skills, and client care.
This includes the identification of gaps and/or opportunities to improve processes and practices and provide evidence-informed recommendations for change. The NP is expected to participate in quality improvement initiatives and identify areas of research, participate in research projects, and promote application of research and evidence in clinical practice. .
