We are seeking a Nurse Practitioner to join our Geriatric Psychiatry department at Mount St. Joseph’s hospital. This role is responsible and accountable for the comprehensive assessment of patients/clients/residents, including diagnosing diseases, disorders, and conditions.
 
The patient population for the Geriatric Psychiatry Unit (GPU) at Mount St. Joseph Hospital consists of those who are 65 years of age or older with a history of psychiatric disorders. These may be late onset mood, psychotic and/or severe anxiety disorders or major neurocognitive impairment such as behavioural and psychological symptoms associated with dementia (BPSD). They may also be at serious risk and/or harm to themselves or others in their current environment and require 24/7 care which has been assessed and identified by their community care providers or geriatric services.
 
Our GPU is a locked 16 bed unit with an expected length of stay for our patients of between one and six weeks. During their stay, patients will be assessed and treated by our interdisciplinary team of Psychiatrists, a Nurse Practitioner, Registered Psychiatric Nurses, Registered Nurses, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Dieticians, Pharmacists and Social Workers. The goal of treatment is to assess, treat and stabilize patients before discharging them back to the community and to provide care to their families and other members of our patients’ support system.

Reporting to the Nurse Practitioner Department Head for professional issues, and Program Director for operational issues, the Nurse Practitioner is responsible and accountable for the comprehensive assessment of patients/clients/residents,including diagnosing diseases, disorders, and conditions. The Nurse Practitioner initiates treatment including health care management, therapeutic interventions and prescribes medications in accordance with the statutory and regulatory standards, limits, and conditions, and employer policies and procedures. The Nurse Practitioner provides professional guidance to other health professionals and practices autonomously and interdependently within the context of an interdisciplinary health care team, making referrals to specialist physicians and other resources as appropriate.

The position collaborates with patients/clients/residents and other health professionals to identify and assess trends and patterns that have implications for patients/residents/clients, families and communities; develops and implements population and evidence based strategies to improve health and participates in policy-making activities that influence health services and practices. The position participates in peer review and self review to evaluate the outcome of services at the patient/client/resident, community, and population level.

Requirements

Current registration as a Nurse Practitioner with the British Columbia College of Nursing Professionals and recent relevant clinical nursing experience. Successful completion of the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). Completion of the Basic Cardiac Life Support Course, Level C. Eligible for Appointment to the Providence Health Care Department of Nurse Practitioners as Medical Staff.

PHC will reimburse Nurse Practitioners (NPs) for the cost of the Objective Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE), upon successful completion, for NP candidates who have not yet completed the exam, and who are hired into a regular or temporary position with PHC. The OSCE reimbursement is in the form of a forgivable loan, which is forgiven after one (1) year of continuous employment in a regular or temporary position with PHC.
