NP Amanda Staton

Maxine Wright Community Health Centre, Surrey, BC

NP Amanda Staton works as a Nurse Practitioner at the Maxine Wright Community Health Centre in Surrey, British Columbia.  Amanda has worked as a NP for about 15 years and was inspired to move from an RN role to becoming a NP by a desire to offer more to the patients, clients and families she was working with. At that time, Amanda admits to not truly understanding the role of the NP and was not sure what the “more” was that she wanted to do. Amanda is drawn to working with families and individuals who are experiencing marginalization within health care and society.  She focused her graduate degree on working with marginalized and vulnerable populations, and feels fortunate to continue this work today.

What motivates you in your practice, and how do you stay inspired on challenging days?

“I stay inspired and motivated to continue, even on the challenging days, by striving to provide health care that is grounded in a client-led, trauma informed and relationship-based approach.  The resiliency I see in client’s motivates me to be better and do better.  I celebrate the successes that the client’s identify are meaningful to them, despite how small. I focused on our shared humanity and try to build therapeutic relationships so that the client’s know they matter and are worthy of being cared for, and I see such amazing growth when client’s experience a safe and therapeutic relationship that I am motivated to continue.  I also rely in the multidisciplinary team of my NP and nursing colleagues, counselors, and physician specialists that I work with to share the load and debrief as needed.”
